Matthew Harris Jouett painted this portrait of his eldest child when George was approximately 10 years old in 1823. George later graduated from Transylvania College, practiced law, served twice as Mayor of Lexington, and ran a steamboat company on the Ohio River out of Louisville. He was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Union Army’s 15th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry when he died at the Battle of Perryville in 1862.
